    October 15, 2007

  • John--blame it on IE again (or not), but the recent comments page seems to be broken today.

    October 15, 2007

  • Right... all I get is "Comments since your last visit" followed by... nothing!

    October 15, 2007

  • Firefox, too...

    October 15, 2007

  • I'm dying here...

    October 15, 2007

  • oops, once again i accidentally moved forward something that was half baked. fixed.

    October 15, 2007

  • Fixed! Damn, you're quick. :-)

    October 15, 2007

  • Anyone else have this problem? If there's a link to a Youtube clip in a comment, no further content gets loaded (Safari, Mac) below that comment on the latest 400 page.

    October 17, 2007

  • I know this was discussed before on your profile in the context of wonky HTML, but what about well-formed HTML? Is there a limit tꦐo how many tags we can use per comment? I seem to only be able to use 1 or 2 (2 italics or 1 link) at a time. If I remove one, the other will then show up. Weird! Is ꧑it just me?

    October 17, 2007

  • npydyuan, that's a known bug. the code for truncating the comments isn't smart enough (which is another way of saying, I'm not smart enough :-). what it's doing is chopping the comment in the middle of the youtube embed tags, and the munged tags then screw up the rest of the page. it needs to figure out if the chop point is inside a tag, and then either chop the whole thing, or move the chop point to the end of the tag. i'll work on it.

arby, i see some weird behavior with html in comments, but i'm not sure what's causing it. one thing i see is that sometimes you submit a comment, and tags aren't visible. b🍒ut if you reload the pℱage that was commented on, they become visible. which is some artifact of using ajax for the comments; exactly what, i'm not sure. i'll keep digging.

    October 17, 2007

  • Or you (meaning commenters - not you, John) could use to shorten the URL to minimize the chances of it getting caught in the truncate bit.

    October 17, 2007

  • Yes, I've seen that too, arby. I just refresh the page and usually everything sorts itself out.

    October 17, 2007

  • Seems as if there ought to be information on this page about actual insects, too. Or viruses. The various kinds of bugs could interact.

    October 17, 2007

  • Maybe that stuff is on the bug (singular) page..💯.? Signed, Too Lazy to 𝓀Go Look. ;)

    October 17, 2007

  • It seems that the bug I reported yesterday (via e-mail) is fixed now. Thank you! // EDIT: Opps! Not at all! The lists of words are updated in an odd way... //

I will report about features I think could be useful, especially about tags. I have to post a comment in the word features, isn't it?

    October 22, 2007

  • frangarnes, should be fixed--moving a word should now update its word page so that the 'appears in these lists' column is correct.

    October 22, 2007

  • The feed for the 'random words' widget, previosuly busted, is now fixed. Thanks for the bug report, VanishedOne :-)

    October 22, 2007

  • I see you matched my username to my e-mail address.

💜I'm not sureꦚ whether this qualifies as a bug or just some eccentric records in the autocompleter, but I ended up at and I fin🧸d that it has an entry and I can comment on it, but the links in the comments as they appear on the wordie.org feed, and in the lists if I add this entry to a list or to my favourites, point to wordie.org/words/

    October 23, 2007

  • The word content of a list vanishes from the page when you edit its description (it's still there, if you navigate back to the list page after editing). I also can't seem to delete a list description.

    October 25, 2007

  • Hey John... Is it just me and my stupid computer, or is the list I entered last night (Prosie: The Crisis) coming up all wonky? It comes up in Times New Roman, it looks like, and whenever I make a comment or edit one, it gives me an error message.

It's not a big deal--i🐠t's still functioning and readable--but is there anything I can ☂do to fix it?

    October 27, 2007

  • This bug is probably mine, not the site's, but I couldn't find an answer elsewhere. I can't seem to get an external link to show up/function as an external link. What am I supposed to be entering in order to have it work?

    October 28, 2007

  • Regular HTML should do the trick. In the case of creating links, try the following code:

    <a href="URL-GOES-HERE">TEXT-GOES-HERE</a>

I'm assuming that's what you were looking for🅘, if not... *screams for John's attention*

    October 28, 2007

  • Yup, I figured it was just me. Thanks, uselessness, that worked. I'm brand spanking new to web design and don't have all the basics memoriz💦ed just yet𒈔.

    October 28, 2007

  • That's okay, teaching others the basic tags is pretty much the cross I've borne for years as punishment for learning HTML in 1995. I don't even think about it anymore. I build web sites in my sleep. :-P

    October 28, 2007

  • *trying to think of a comeback for that*

    *not succeeding*

    October 28, 2007

  • John, just noticed today that if I try and wrap more than one word in a comment in brackets, only the first one "takes." Like this.

    November 3, 2007

  • Thanks r&o (hm, sounds like a railroad). Yeah, I smurphed links at💖 some point, will revisit later tod🌄ay.

    November 3, 2007

  • err..i have a problem with Your words section..it wont open..is it a bug of mine or the site? thanks

    November 3, 2007

  • oroboros, reesetee et. al., I finally fixed the multiple-brackets-not-linking bugs (see pineapple express).

Suke, I can't duplicate that--are you (ౠor is anyone else) still having troubl🍸e with 'Your Words'? If so, please email me (john-at-wordie.org), and let me know what kind of browser you're using.

    November 5, 2007

  • Many thanks, John! Linking is one of the best feat▨ures of Wordie.

    November 5, 2007

  • Aye, Johnnie lad. Good on ye, matie! Like layin' carpet, eh? Bubble down here, pops up yonder 'n vicey versey or otherwise...

    November 5, 2007

  • Thanks, John! All better.

    November 5, 2007

  • My lists have lost their comment counts: e.g. '...has been listed 1 time, with comments'

    November 6, 2007

  • The comment counts seem to come and go fairly randomly.

    November 6, 2007

  • Help! John, when I click on "more" under any of the comments on the front page, I get "Nobody is listing ____. Why don't you?" and I can't read any comments or see any word pages unless I list the word!

    *missing the comment fix*

    November 7, 2007

  • Oops, sorry c_b, an artifact of the paging stuff I added last night. Should be fixed.

And comment counts a🧸re back, this time for good, I hope🍰.

    November 7, 2007

  • Thanks, John! I was having the same problem as c_b, but I couldn't even get to this page. And I thought caffeine was addictive.... ;-)

    November 8, 2007

  • As mentioned on slack bastard, viewing tags as clouds seems to produce the 500 Application Error. As far as I can tell it's the case for all tags (though the list of tags can be viewed as a cloud); also, the tag dictionary.com (edit: but with square brackets instead of ) seems to produce a 500 anyway.

    November 18, 2007

  • Cheers. (I'm still seeing a 500 from the weird URL-based one, but it seems to be an exceptional case.)

    November 18, 2007

  • The problem with the comment box not appearing on this page has clearly been fixed; regarding the one with delayed comment appearances, it seems from the comment feed that some people are talking about that on bug (or will later turn out to have done).

    November 19, 2007

  • This is true, VanishedOne, because neither jennarenn nor I could make a comment on this page, but for some reason were able to comment on the bug page. Anyway John says all is fixed now. :)

    November 19, 2007

  • Seems to be a problem with the "add tags" box. It appears in an odd position at the top of the page and won't allow you to specify parts of speech.

    November 20, 2007

  • Add tags box position should be back to where it belongs, thanks.

    November 20, 2007

  • Hi John; this comment of trivet's--

"oroboros, I feel like I've seen a list of these somewhere, but I don't remember. Neat idea!"

when you click on the 'more' link it doesn't go anywhere. I don't have the moxie to click thru all🦋 my lists to see if🌜 I can find it that way (time for bed).

    November 22, 2007

  • Is it acting like 'befuddlement and swearing' as described in my comment from 'about 1 month ago'? I found the feed links pointed to wordie.org/words/.

    November 22, 2007

  • Okay, I was just using the "search comments" feature and I discovered that on the results page, the search form at the top does not work -- it searches for a null string, rather than the value I type. So if I want to perform a second search, I have to go back to the main search page.

    November 25, 2007

  • Somebody called seems to be inserting spam comments with a link to a site selling replica watches. Twelve of these comments so far.

    November 25, 2007

  • Thanks much SoG, I just nuked that user.

Looked like the work of a bot. Really hope th🌌at doesn't become a regular thing.

    November 26, 2007

  • o, deleting the user should have fixed the posts. if that's not the case, could you send me a link? i can delete the helga ones manually, and fix the script so that nuking a user also gets rid of any detritus they left around.

    November 26, 2007

  • So John, did you remove the subject line field for comments? I guess that always was a bit extraneous, and a point of confusion for new users... but pages look so weird without it now! .;-)

    November 28, 2007

  • Good eye, uselessness. I didn't even notice until you pointed that out.

    November 28, 2007

  • Yep, removed the subject line late last night. I agree, it does look a bit naked, but it didn't seem to be used much, and it did occasionally cause confusion. I figure if someone wants a subject heading, they can fake it with 'strong' tags.

    November 28, 2007

  • Great.

    November 28, 2007

  • ha! bilby, that's excellent, fantastic way to give a bug report. i'll remove the subject line from the edit window too, tonight.

    November 28, 2007

  • np, I just noticed it. Like someone else said, the lack of the subject box is noticeable for its absence and it wasn't absent from the edit box. I can almost hear the hounds of the Baskervilles not barking furiously :-)

    November 28, 2007

  • Oh, I do not miss that subject line, but didn't notice it was gone. I'm glad someone noticed and patted John on the head for removing it--I was just blissfully unaware.

Like when driving from upstate ♏New York into Vermont, and something feels different and good but you can't put your finger on it, until you realize (or someone tells you) that billboards are illegal in Vermont. You suddenly realize that you've NOT been missing them.

    November 28, 2007

  • I like the subject line! Many of my comments won't be nearly as witty without them.

    November 28, 2007

  • Also I don't know if this is a bug or if I should even bring it up (because my favorite aren't listed in the "Some HTML" popup, and yet old comments using them still display correctly) but it looks like HTML doesn't display on the home page in comments. At least, my little strike tag doesn't (on WeirdNet, if you must know). This is unfortunate because it makes my comment make much less sense.

Because it's All About ME!! *twirls*

    November 28, 2007

  • Ooh, here's a real bug - clicking "Comment" with no text in the box results in a 500 Application Error.

    *acts helpful*

    November 28, 2007

  • John, VanishedOne pointed out that on the page aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa*thud* we can't see the person who listed it. Thanks to a comment on that page, it looks like faintheart.

So, I did a search of Wordie looking for that user, and got several results, but couldn't click on any of the links.

Any ideas? Did I do something wrong?

    November 30, 2007

  • I just clicked on that link in the previous post and got a 'nobody is listing' page.

    November 30, 2007

  • Ah. The correct link is *thud*.

    November 30, 2007

  • The search links worked for me: I can't find this word among Faintheart's words.

    November 30, 2007

  • Found it! Onomatopoeia that best describes Faintheart.

    November 30, 2007

  • VO, my link didn't work because I didn't properly count the number of a's, etc.--just giving a flavor of that word listing, if you will.

    November 30, 2007

  • Ah. Just posted that on the other page, VO (and I won't type the...er..."word" again here)--Words we add to our profiles show up as unattributed, I believe.

    November 30, 2007

  • Hey John; should I have the delete option on all these comments? A "mad deleter" could wipe 'em all out don'tcha think?

Edit: Now the option is gone after posting this. Here's what happened: I was deleting some of my otiose comments on this page and noticed that I had the option to delete not only my own comments but anybody's! For a trial I deleted one of your's which was moot...and it's fer sure gone! Gonna try it again now and see what happens🅠...

Edit II: Here's the skinny. When I edit a comment to a blank box, then delete it, the delete option appears for all other comments on the page as well. It seems I've noticed this before but when it seemed to "fix itself" I forgot about it. What happened this time is I noticed the seeming fix but was🐠 able, by experiment, to cause the anomalous recurrence.

P.S.: Refreshꦦing the page remo꧒ves the delete option.

    December 1, 2007

  • Hi o, thanks, good catch. Will fix tonight.

    December 1, 2007

  • Hmm, I must seize this opportunity to do some damage before the curtain falls on my nefariousness... ;-)

    December 1, 2007

  • I managed to add test but got this 3 times when t𓃲rying to look at ꦓthe comments:"The uri of the page I couldn't find: /words/test"

    December 1, 2007

  • Oroboros, I believe I just fixed issue with the 'delete' link showing up when it shouldn't. U, you'll have to find another outlet for your nefariousness.

    December 2, 2007

  • I think the list description bug has eased itself a bit, but other editing ones still stand: the "more about you" box on my profile is currently choking. It's a symptom of a longstanding bug where sometimes, when a comment contains external links, they vanish upon editing and become no more than text. Which is better than nothing, but still perplexing.

    December 4, 2007

  • Yes. I have had the same experience that sarra describes when trying to edit my profile - specifically, HTML commands to create links in the "more about you" box are unsuccessful in creating the desired links.

    December 5, 2007

  • The ubiquitous Hillary-bot has paid us another visit (actually, I guess, in her last incarnation she was called Helga, but her cyborg soullessness shines through, regardless of choice of moniker), with news of available medications. Fortunately, there is a convenient delete link immediately adjacent to her little spam dropping.

    December 16, 2007

  • Thanks for the spam alert sionnach, the Hillary bot has been zapped.

Sarra, thanks for the bug report, that'll be fixed tomorrow, when some new features go live. I'll go into greater detail when they're announced on Errata, but for now I have just one word: group lists.

    December 17, 2007

  • Er...John, you've been working too hard. That's two words. ;->

    December 17, 2007

  • Hi John, you ole site master you! The "Hillary" post on my potpourri list has no delete option. Like to get rid of her pathetic ass, iffn you don' mind...por favor!

    ;O)

    December 17, 2007

  • Yo, o! Hillary's detritus should be gone now.

Looks like group lists aren't quite ready for prime time. Hopefully I'll kick them out the door tomorrow night.

update: changed my mind and launched it; brief announcement over at features.

    December 17, 2007

  • John, From my Wordie lists, when I click🐽 on the link for my comments or my tags, I get an error screen that insults you as a person and a❀s a webmaster.

    December 17, 2007

  • Hmmm... when I try to see someone's tags, I am instead taken to my first list. Odd.

    December 18, 2007

  • Ditto.

    December 18, 2007

  • I'm unable to view all my words on one page. And when I click on the next page link, nothing happens.

    December 18, 2007

  • Thanks Minerva, should be fixed now.

    December 18, 2007

  • Woohoo!

    December 18, 2007

  • Hi John; I can't go deeper than 500 into my comments w/o getting the error msg. It sure would be great to be able to have a >last function as well as >next! Or, a spectrum of page numbers on which to click.

    December 19, 2007

  • John--I've noticed, I think since we got the feature enabling others to contribute to lists, that when you click on "more" under a comment on the front page, you get taken... right back to the front page. It didn't happen for every comment, but... it was only today that I thought maybe that's true only for comments on lists that have other contributors added to them...?

Anyone else noticing the difficulty of r🐲eading full comments from the front page?

    December 19, 2007

  • That's been known to happen before when the words in question were somewhat less than perfectly formed; see my post below about "befuddlement and swearing questionmark".

    December 20, 2007

  • thanks c_b, the list links should be working now.

    December 20, 2007

  • Thanks again John for the retouches ... may you have many train rides.

One bug that bugs me is that when you make a comment on one of your own lists and have notification turned on you get an email that says:

You have made a comment on one of your own Wordie lists.

    etc.

I still fart a lot when I can but my short term memory is holding up. I don't need notifications to remind me of my own citations.

    Thanks,B

    December 20, 2007

  • Can't seem to tag anything j🥃ust now, John. Keep getting the old "500 Application Error" message.

    December 20, 2007

  • Same problem as SoG--500 Application Error when I try to tag a word.

    December 21, 2007

  • Yep, still the case for me too. No tagee no washee. ;o)

    December 21, 2007

  • Tags are happening again. Time for a wash, O.

    December 21, 2007

  • I think I'm a bug. The reason the site was down all morning? Because I put up the 'maintenance' page for a one minute procedure late last night, then forgot to put the site back up. Oops.

    December 31, 2007

  • Whatever you did seems to have helped, John; Wordie is faster today than usual.

    December 31, 2007

  • I won't complain. It gave me a chance to catch up on comments! :-)

    January 1, 2008

  • Hi John. Happy New Year! Getting a "500 application error" when I try to move a word from one list to another.

    January 2, 2008

  • I created an 'Open' list. When I look at the words there I have the option to delete or move, just like any other list. Delete doesn't work for words not listed by me, though I haven't tried move.

    January 2, 2008

  • Update on my last comment. The only thing I seem to have difficulty moving is "j'oublie tout, donc je suis :)". Is it something to do with the :) at the end?

Or maybe Wordie has a temporary 🎀aver🐓sion to French?

    January 2, 2008

  • Can you change the URL of zetahydrae o🀅n the news page to ? I switched from a tumblr subdomain recently.

    January 4, 2008

  • I clicked on yezt! today when it appeared on the Recent Words list on the main page. On the word page it said 1 Wordie listed yezt! however on the right there was ♐🌊no 'first listed by' and no 'appears on these lists'.

    January 5, 2008

  • It might be in someone's profile. I don't think words on those pages show up as listed by anyone.

    January 5, 2008

  • Hmmm. But why shouldn't we see if a word has been listed in someone's profile? On the other meat hook there's an element of mystery there, and I like mystery.

    January 5, 2008

  • You'll have to take that up with The Great Wordie Himself. :-)

    January 5, 2008

  • The Great Wordie? Is that kind of like The Great Pumpkin?

    koldewyse: done

    January 5, 2008

  • Precisely, John--only far more erudite, of course. :-)

    January 7, 2008

  • Great Wordie, the "add to your words" function on the word pages doesn't seem to want to cooperate today. (Unless it's just me.) I'm getting the ol' 500 message.

    January 7, 2008

  • It's not just you r_t. I too am getting the dreaded 'gone all 500' error.

    January 7, 2008

  • Thanks, adding from a word page should be fixed. Artifact of .

    January 7, 2008

  • Thanks! It was worth it. :-)

    January 7, 2008

  • Just a very minor thing: Wordie defaults the case of a word to lower, except (it seems) with accented characters. So Žižekophobia and žižekophobia have different entries. Probably not worth worrying about though as I can't think of any other examples.

    January 12, 2008

  • Thanks yarb, good to know. Some funky character set issue I imagine, I'll look into it.

    January 12, 2008

  • I imagine John, that at some point you call toLowerCase or the Ruby equivalent on the string before putting it into the database. Since Ž is not a-zA-Z, the method would not doing anything to it. I doubt any programming language is smart enough to recognize the bizarre Unicode characters that have upper and lower case associated with them.

Edit: I💮'd actually meant to use square brackets as in regex syntax for a-zA-Z. Obviously that didn't work, but I think it turned out well anyway.

    January 13, 2008

  • Just so seanahan. The slavs might have to get a free pass on the lowercasing :-)

    January 13, 2008

  • Hi John,

There is apparently some kind of bug surrounding the use of an apostrophe...for example in the word four o'clocks...words of that nature do not seem to resp🍷ond to movement from one place to another on the site. I have encountered this problem with other words containing apostrophes. Is it me🌳?

    January 21, 2008

  • I just noticed a problem with the list search feature. The "search again" form on the results page doesn't work... instead of searching for what I type in the field, it searches for an empty string (and of course returns no matches). So if I want to perform a second search, I have to go back to the main list search page.

    January 22, 2008

  • The list search and apostrophe bugs should be squashed. I also noticed that at some point when I was tightening security, I accidentally squashed the ability to embed video in comments. Fixed now.

    January 22, 2008

  • my apologies for being redundant if this has already been brought to light.. but whenever i click on the "random word" feature, it returns with a "nobody is listing 'such-and-such', why don't you" message instead of a listed word. is it just my computer?

    January 22, 2008

  • That's suddenly happening to me too. Although it's given me some delicious-looking words, so I'd like it to be kept as an option if possible.

Apparently nobody is listing treedancing yet; why don't I?

    January 22, 2008

  • No, wait... when I click on it in my comment it seems somebody is listing treedancing. Oh well.

    January 22, 2008

  • yes, the same goes for me with blue suburban sky..drat! :P

    January 22, 2008

  • Oddly, the random word feature now brings up different words -- but says none of them have been listed, even when they have...

    January 23, 2008

  • Still seem to be having problems with words containing an apostrophe. I cannot seem to add the term shepherd's purse or solomon's seal to my list.

    January 25, 2008

  • On the page listing someone's tags, the total for number of comments is wrong.

    January 26, 2008

  • Hi John,Can't seem to move Mr. Potatoe Head. Might it be the period after the Mr? I get the 500 Application error.

Maybe the same thing that causes problems with the apostrop﷽he is happeni♒ng here.

  • "Can't seem to move Mr. Potatoe Head" is the best bug report I've ever seen.

    January 29, 2008

  • Not bad when you're .

    January 29, 2008

  • For some reason Wordie won't let me add Schrödinger's cat to any of my lists. How weird is that?

When you click on "add to your list" no drop-down menu a💙ppears. An💜y ideas, John? May be the apostrophe problem listed below.

    January 29, 2008

  • I managed to add it by going to the list page and using the box there, so it's apparently a problem with the dropdown rather than anything inherent in Schrödinger's cat itself.

    January 29, 2008

  • Thanks VanishedOne. Your suggestion works for me too.

    January 29, 2008

  • Mr. Potato Head is now mobile.

You can also add Schrödinger's cat to yo💖ur🐬 lists, but if you do George McFly may never meet Lorraine.

    January 30, 2008

  • You added it to your list, VanishedOne - but are you sure it's there?

    January 30, 2008

  • "Mr. Potato Head is now mobile."

how could you let him get behind the wheel..?! he's still doing community service for his last DUI...

    January 30, 2008

  • Wordie tells me the cat is there; I can't vouch for its being alive or dead.

    January 30, 2008

  • John, the page generated by the random word button no longer shows whose lists the word appears on.

    February 2, 2008

  • I've found when landing on a 'Nobody is listing' page while logged out that the login/register links seem not to do anything.

    February 11, 2008

  • Hi John, I'm trying to add "good &amp; plenty" and have gotten the application error message a couple times. Is it becau𓂃se of the ampersand?

    February 17, 2008

  • Hi John,Image search doesn't work with words containing an apo🅠strophe.

    February 19, 2008

  • Random word seemes to borked, john. I'm getting a 500 error.

    February 29, 2008

  • Thanks yarb, fixed. Also fixed word list cloud view, which had been busted.

    February 29, 2008

  • Yah, I've been noticing that the "cloud" feature doesn't seem to work on public lists. Is that just me? Or is it not working on other lists too?

    February 29, 2008

  • It had been broken, but I think it's good now. It's working here, at least.

    February 29, 2008

  • On profiles, the 'least favourite word' and 'onomatopoeia that best describes' links have an extra /word/ so that e.g. the least favourite word bugs would lead to (and so in practice they all lead to word).

    March 9, 2008

  • Attempting to list internalism and externalism just now has produced a 404 for /words/import_to

I juꦓst tried a non-ghost, and that performed okay, so it may be a ghost-ﷺspecific bug.

    March 9, 2008

  • Yes: now that I've added them from a list page, the drop-down box appears, so it's presumably something to do with ghostliness.

    March 9, 2008

  • A couple of bugs today:

    - Clicking on "see more" from a comment search takes me to word.

    - The entry for mackem doesn't display the word 𒅌itself as a header, and attempting to comment returns🃏 a 404.

    March 9, 2008

  • Also, testing with ghostliness as well as mackem suggests favouriting a ghost won't work, and image searching it will return a 500 Application Error.

Oooh, John's going to be happy...

Maybe our gremlin is a Geordie.

    March 10, 2008

  • John, on one of my lists, when I went to edit the description, the highlighted links aren't an option--I just get a straight-line cursor and can't click "add tags," "edit," "delete," "cloud," or anything but the arrows next to "alpha." Anyone else having this issue?

    March 11, 2008

  • I'm having the same problem that chained_bear is having.

    March 11, 2008

  • That makes three of us.
